Boro’s Shot Shy History Makers

TWO minutes from history…. as discussed previously, mighty Boro stand on the verge of an unwanted record. The current bunch of shot-shy wasters have forced us to endure a 525 minute goal drought and have closed in on Gareth Southhgate’s relegation-bound faint-hearts who managed 527 minutes (a mark reached with a 0-0 draw with Wigan – the day Cattermole crocked Digard – on this very day in 2009 incidentally).
If they can manage to not score before 68 minutes, then they will take the all time all competitions record of 593 minutes set in August and September 1978.
Anyway. let’s have a sweep stake.

Will the law of averages kick in and set Boro to a goal fest with Danny Graham getting off the mark on three minutes? Will one “go in off someone’s arse” and open the floodgates? Will Lee Tomlin score a sizzling debut goal to sweep away the gloom? Former Leeds man Jonathan Woodgate to bundle home from a corner? Former transfer target Ross McCormack to run riot before Boro grab a late consolation on 69 minutes? The possibilities are endless. Maybe Shay will come up in stoppage time to head home a fairytale final bromantic snog of a goal.
Project your own bias onto this blank canvas of unwritten semi-derby uncertainty and tell me what is goin gto happen. Who will score for us? Against us? And who will get sent off? Someone always gets sent off.
Me, I’m going for Boro to score early…. but not early enough to prevent this side bearing a mark of shame. I’ll go for Boro to win 1-0 with Graham scoring after 11 minutes. Leadbitter to get pedalled on 78 for a second yellow. (The ref is the same bloke that showed three reds and seven yellows and sent off two of their’s plus Tony Mac in a game in August 2011 at Elland Road where there wasn’t a really bad tackle all game.)
Here’s my team.

I know Karanka said he wouldn’t start Tomlin in the press conference but he said the same about Danny Graham before Blackburn and I don’t think he has any choice if he wants to change the dynamics up front. Beside’s Tomlin has trained with the side for three weeks now and is raring to go.
I also think he will go with Whitehead and Leadbitter as his two holding players with Chalobah on the bench – he can play at centre-back so can cover for any knacks there. I think he would be preferred to Hines. But what do i know?

  1. My son and I were at the Wigan match, we’ll be there tomorrow, so obviously we’ll win 3-0. Tomlin, Graham and Woody to score…….

  2. I’m in agreement with Andy. Not sure anyone will be in agreement with my username after this, but…
Tomlin bursts forward from the kick-off; Leeds know about his temper and the ref’s profligacy with cards so they throw in some hard challenges to upset him, but it backfires and we’re gifted a 1st-minute penalty. Leadbitter puts it through the back of the net.
This sets the tone for a scrappy physical battle that remains otherwise goalless until a spate of cards sees 10-man Boro against nine and a raft of yellows, giving our creative midfield that extra yard of caution to break free and put the game to bed.
    FT: Boro 3-0 Leeds
    Leadbitter 1′
    Adomah 85′
    Graham 86′
On careful consideration, I reckon our red has to be the heroic Shay Given punching clear…via the side of McCormack’s face. The unsightly swelling obstructs poor Ross’s vision and he fluffs the resulting penalty. I lad can dream…

  3. Simple. Boro 1 (Tomlin on 11min and 47sec) who then gets sent off on the 57th min. Leeds 1 (Ross McCormack pen. on 88mins following a Jonathan Woodgate pointless tug on his shirt ).
If I get the triple I want AV to send me a surprise gift of his choice.

  4. Middlesbrough 1 – 3 Leeds Utd
    McCormack (og) 1
    Omeruo (og) 45+2
    McCormack 85 (pen)
    Omeruo sent off 85
    Chalobah (og) 90+2
Att: 222222 (Taxi to West London)

  5. My house is divided, half Boro season ticket holders and half Leeds season ticket holders
Going for Boro 2 (Adomah and Carayol)
    Leeds 2 (McCormack 2)
Keeping my birthday celebrations intact with a happy household

  6. I think in the reign of our spanish manager PP is in danger of becoming a ‘corredor de pollo’ – at least you kept the score down and didn’t get Karanka sent to the stands.
I’ll keep my prediction more upbeat (after all a ball is yet to be kicked and will go 2-0 (Carayol, Tomlin)

  7. AV. Apologies. Re-read and you did mention no place for Carayol, but why? Injury, tactics or are the rumours true about a falling out with AK and the player training on his own last Sunday correct?
**AV writes: Karanka said after the game he was left out because of his attitude but if he trains well this week he will be considered for selection next week. He was one of the ones who “think they are better than they are”. (See this week’s team sheet for further evidence). Karanka was seething after Watford so whether Muzzy has answered back or not I don’t know. Karanka is ruthless so only one winner there.
